Title: Mom is the best teacher
Date: October 2001 Issue

One day a few years ago Marsha Rogers overheard one of her kids playing in the next room with a playmate. She was saying, "Let's play real estate ladies. You can be my mommy and I'll be Nancy Guest." She couldn't have imagined at the time that one of her four children would, indeed, grow up to become a "real estate lady" just like mom.

Chelsea Morgan, Marsha's oldest, doesn't have to "play", she is a REALTOR(R). A true professional in her own right, Chelsea has joined her mother in the business and become very successful. Although she has had her license for just under three years, Chelsea, in fact, has been in real estate most of her life, an unsuspecting understudy to her mom.

An intriguing chain of events triggered the eventual partnership between mother and daughter. As manager for a local market research company, Chelsea knew too well the protocol regarding dating within the company. When an infatuation developed between Chelsea and Jeff Morgan, it was decided that Jeff would be the one to quit since she had the better job. Marsha then hired him to become her assistant. Once Jeff became involved in his future mother-in-law's business, he went to Chelsea with a plan. He could see that Marsha needed more than an assistant; she needed a partner. Chelsea agreed with him and told him to get his license. But no, that wasn't his plan. He knew the natural fit would be for Chelsea to join Marsha to form a mother/daughter team and, once again, Jeff lost his job for Chelsea. Chelsea graduated from Westminster College, received her real estate license and got married all in the same week. It couldn't have been at a better time for Marsha. Her husband, Alan, a professor at Westminster had recently been diagnosed with leukemia. It completely changed their family's philosophy.

Knowing now how short life is, they each want to just live life to its fullest. For them, that means slowing down, being together and sharing with friends. They ride mountain bikes and enjoy the lakes on wave runners. Work doesn't have the same meaning anymore. Marsha is content for Chelsea to take on some of the responsibility of follow-up. She takes more time off to be with Alan, just recently celebrating 30 years together, and to play with her one-year-old grandson. It wasn't always that way. Marsha has sold real estate for 21 years and was with Al and Dave Mansell most of that time. She was on the top three of their company for many years. Marsha started out her career with a young family and even added to it as she went about the business of selling lots and houses. Seventeen years with the same builder and her many loyal clients all attribute to what everyone knows - Marsha cares. She cleans flies out of window sills for unhappy buyers, and has even had clients staying in her own home when delicate timing of a closing went awry. "Slowing up" for Marsha is still a very high-speed pace. Her recent move to RE/MAX Masters, although difficult because of longtime friendships and close ties, has proven to be very good for the duo.

Ever present are the values and high standards mom has maintained and passed on to her daughter. And now it is only too evident that Chelsea cares, too.
